Why this Matters:
· Lack
of access to food assistance for people with felony drug convictions adversely
affects families and children by tightening an already thinly stretched budget
for housing, utilities and transportation, essentials for successful recovery
and healthy families.
· Indiana
has a persistent and growing opioid epidemic resulting in an increase of drug
related arrests. Tackling this growing problem requires preventative measures
as well as post-conviction support to aid in preventing relapse, including
access to healthy and nutritious food while in recovery and beyond.
· The
road to recovery is long and difficult. The ban places an unnecessary hardship
upon people working to stay clean and become contributing and productive
members of society.
· No
other felony class has the same lifetime restriction post release.

story from WRTV 6.
